When using crutches, it’s important to follow proper technique to ensure safety and avoid injury. Here are a few tips on how to use them correctly:
Fitting the Crutches
Adjust the height: The top of the crutch should be about 1-2 inches below your armpits when standing straight. A simple way to measure this is by placing 3 fingers between the space of your armpit and the top of the crutch. Once it fits comfortably, it is at the right height.
Hand Grips: Adjust the hand grips so that your elbows are slightly bent, about 15-30 degrees.
Posture: Stand up straight, with your weight distributed on your healthy leg and your hands on the grips, not resting in your armpits. This prevents nerve damage by ensuring the top of the crutch is not pressing against your armpits.
Walking with Crutches
Starting position: Place both crutches about a foot in front of you, shoulder-width apart.
Step forward with the injured leg: Swing your injured leg forward and place it between the crutches, keeping the weight off of it.
Move your healthy leg: Push down on the hand grips and use your arms to lift your body. Swing your good leg forward to meet the crutches or pass slightly in front of them, landing on your healthy leg.
Repeat: Continue moving the crutches forward, followed by your injured leg, and then your good leg.
Tips:
Balance: Always use your hands and arms to support your weight, not your armpits.
Stairs: When going up stairs, lead with your good leg. When going down stairs, lead with your crutches and injured leg.
Slow and steady: Take small steps, especially when turning, to maintain balance.
If done properly, using crutches should reduce strain on the injured leg and allow you to move safely while healing. Additional Resources
